<img:stuff/2237_wiki_help_9y7vcgcflr5.jpg>

Rules:
Poems must be written by Elftowners and posted here by the original author. Which means, no matter how much you might like a particular poem in somebody's house, you are not allowed to add it here without the writer's permission. Poems must be written in good English. Let someone check your spelling and grammar if you're not sure about it.
Limit is 2 entries per person.

Length:
Since the five chosen poems will be featured on Main Street, we would like to keep them fairly small. Anywhere from 8-35 lines is acceptable. Be creative but please keep that in mind!

Themes:
Submissions for Daily poems on Mainstreet are usually not accepted when they feature violence, disturbing actions or insults.

For the Christmas competition we will be less strict about it, except for insulting contents. If a poem is judged to have insulting contents by the Daily Poem Team it will be removed without question.

And obviously, poems must have something to do with Christmas preferably with a fantasy or sci-fi slant.

How to post it here:
Add the poem after the last one that has been already posted. Don't forget to write its title and author (Written by...) .

Deadline:
December 18th

Note:
Five Christmas poems will be picked out by the Daily Poem Team among all those presented. Participants will receive special Christmas badges and the winners will receive Masters of Building badges.

1. What do you buy a dragon for Christmas?

What do you buy a dragon for Christmas?
Quite a dilemma, I certainly think
You can’t buy a hipflask, even if it is silver-plated
For someone who never, ever drinks

You can’t buy them notebooks, you can’t buy them toe-socks
A paper calendar would only fry
It makes me laugh to think of buying gloves
And putting them on; he’d be obliged to try.

You can’t buy a wooden photo frame, knowing it’ll burn.
How can you get books, when they’ll end up crisp?
Buying a dragon hairspray is never any good
One puff, and we’ll all be December mist!

Purchasing for a dragon is always a problem
Especially if you go for originality.
So, I’ll just use that old and boring present
A candle for a dragon will do for me!

2. The Great Elf Cometh

On Dancing, faster Cometea, zap the lights Rudolf!
Speeding along through warps and christmas wyrmholes,
A mighty magick on golden runners slips through the night.

Great Red #1, the mighty Sleigh of the Great Elf filled to bursting,
anticipated, but never expected, the spirit of the Polar Elves spreads over the worlds.

In many Elfhouses, the long and the short, the stripey and the darned,
in wool and cashmere, in cotton and homespun, the stockings hang,
on chimney and door frame, on hobbit hole and orcan cave.

Lying in their beds of fluff or stone, of sticks and muck or fairy down,
each dreams of the Christmas magicks and the morning of much surprizes.

For in Elftown, the Mayor is supreme, but even here, the magicks of the Great Red Elf,
come and touch every heart and soul, and in your House, may you find the wish of your heart,
and the special secret of your deepest joy.

The streets are quiet, the fires burning low, but candles in the windows, and much holly and mead,
stand and wait the joys of the morrow, the tearing of papers and the ripping of ribbons,
then the many will dance in celebration, of new lives, of new friends, and presents gleaming and new,
but for me my friends, it is enough that I have met YOU!

Dedicated to Faith [Lerune] and her precious new little girl.

3. 'Tis Christmas

'Tis Christmas, and I do fear
For my sanity, the end may be dang'rously near.
Too many shoppers, too many sales,
At the thought, my face grows cold and pales.
As people clamor for Christmas spirit,
I reach for another - my hand draws near it.
But wait! There's better a way
To survive the time to Christmas Day.
I'll go to the town, see the people harried,
Acting as if their hearts are merried,
And I shall relax, and I shall dare
To free myself from holiday care,
From the trappings and the obligations
That plague the people throughout the nations.
And I shall watch the people scuttle to and fro,
Running- they have more places to go!
And I shall laugh.

4. Fantasy is Christmas

Elves and faeries.
Snowmen and reindeer.
Jolly old men,
all figures of splendor.

It doesn't matter,
who you might be.
Christmas is here,
come celebrate with me.

No matter the distance,
the joy still arrives.
The mystic and magic,
all brighten our lives.

So don't raise boundaries,
let your imagination go.
Fantasy is only unreal,
if you allow it to be so.

5. Christmas Eve

Little boxes
Stacked in rows
They’re all tied
With petty little bows.

Little elves shuffle there feet,
As they walk in the snow,
Christmas is coming
And they all know.

The sleigh is stacked with goodies,
For all the good girls and boys.
They all are looking forward
To getting there toys.

Santa climes into the sleigh,
While the parents hang bows on trees.
He gets ready for take off.
On Christmas Eve.

2004-11-30 [Cookieholic]: Wheeeeeee I'm the first ^_^

2004-11-30 [Mkejejfh]: go bonk, go bonk ^_^

2004-11-30 [Cookieholic]: Yay ^_^ thanks ingher ^_^

2004-11-30 [shadow_of_life]: THAT WAS COOOL!!!!!!!!!

2004-11-30 [Piccolo Sorcio]: that's a really good and beautiful poem you wrote Bonk...

2004-11-30 [Witless Child]: really cool...the inspirations and all is coo*smile*

2004-11-30 [Sunrose]: I moved the poems to Christmas Poetry 04, page 1 just like was done in the end with the Halloween Poetry Competition. This will save the crew work in the end. Hope you guys don't mind! :*

2004-11-30 [Cookieholic]: thanks everyone ^_^ okay, good idea ;)

2004-12-01 [The Dark Lord]: entries are looking good!

2004-12-02 [bringer of chaos]: Why is is Christmas? What happened to Kwanzaa and Yule and Raamadan and Haunikah? Why isn't it a Holiday competition?

2004-12-02 [nokaredes]: yea! I was gonna write a Yule poem but I didn't know if it'd be allowed because the name of the contest is the Christmas Poetry Competition...

2004-12-02 [Sunrose]: Because we can't have competitions for every Holiday. We have competitions for the main ones, that generally apply to most people in most countries: unlike Holidays you mentioned: they are in comparison less comon celebrated by all people in all countries. You are however welcome to make such a contest yourself of course :)

2004-12-02 [la vie lemon]: but would this contest be on the Mainstreet?

2004-12-02 [Sunrose]: The winners of the Christmas contest would, but the winners of any contest you make yourself wouldn't. Is that your only goal then? To win and get it on mainstreet? I would think the goal is to write poetry and see what others have written :)

2004-12-02 [Baen]: ARG! 35 lines?? *bangs head and takes out the scissors*

2004-12-02 [Sunrose]: eck! your poem is too long? :(

2004-12-02 [la vie lemon]: no that's not my only goal but it it's the main reason I'd put poetry online...it doesn't really feel like it counts if some random person praises my poetry, but if I was in a contest it might...

2004-12-02 [Sunrose]: You could post it on Daily_poem and who knows it might be picked...I don't know for sure though what rules they have :)

2004-12-02 [Sunrose]: Random peoples opinions can be very valuable..

2004-12-02 [Cookieholic]: they also have 35 lines, you can post on xxl daily poem

2004-12-02 [Sunrose]: Yes but I don't know if they have a minimum, which was the problem in this particular case ;)

2004-12-02 [Cookieholic]: the minimum is 8 lines i think. but i don't know if they'll make a fuss about it.

2004-12-02 [Sunrose]: I checked, it only mentions a maximum of 35 lines :)

2004-12-02 [Sunrose]: Of course if something is a rule, all submitters should follow them, or else the daily poem bosses would start make exceptions which is not fair to the others..hence I think if your poem doesn't follow the rules it will be removed simply to keep everything fair for everyone.

2004-12-03 [nokaredes]: but if there was a minimum, wouldn't it be the same as this contest? or are the two poem places moderated by different people?

2004-12-03 [nokaredes]: I understand what [la vie lemon] is saying. the daily_poem is too big--I don't read it all. I do read the featured poems on the Mainstreet though.

2004-12-03 [Sunrose]: this contest is different And run by other people :) // the daily poem bosses have to read everything too you know.. ;)

2004-12-04 [Cookieholic]: you know, the daily_poem is subjective, so even if you post a poem, if it's not that good, it might never appear =P

2004-12-04 [Sunrose]: of course it is, liking poems or not is always subjective.. :)

2004-12-05 [Ocean Dreaming]: Sorry for dropping in on the conversation like this, but let me try and clarify a few things being a Daily Poem Boss. The daily_poem has many submissions to it, yes. Yes, we have to read all the poems posted there and yes, the Daily Poem is subjective. The line limits on the regular Daily Poem consists of a maximum of 35 lines, but no minimum. Haiku are usually three lines. All the official contests used to be a initiative of the older (and now retired) Daily Poem Bosses Cristina and Calico Tiger. The task of organizing these contests has now fallen to the Assembly and they're doing a great job at it. (cont)

2004-12-05 [Ocean Dreaming]: The rules as they are for the official poetry contests were created with a little advice from the Daily Poem Bosses because, well, because we know which poems work better on Main Street in terms of length and such. Furthermore, while the contest is no longer run by the Daily Poem Bosses, the Daily Poem slot on Main Street is donated to these contests to show the winners and the Daily Poem Bosses judge the entries in this contest. That's all we have to do with the contest, we've advised the Assembly on the best type of rules and we judge the entries. (cont)

2004-12-05 [Ocean Dreaming]: So while there are a number of key differences between the regular Daily Poem and the official contests, it is wrong to say (or imply) that the Daily Poem Bosses have absolutely nothing to do with the contests.

2004-12-06 [Sunrose]: Hmm thanks..think most was clear though. The contest is run by other people, that is not supposed to imply daily poem bosses are not at all involved. In fact all crew could be involved if they wanted to, like I am.. :)

2004-12-06 [Doormat]: I think there should be some word counting too like some poems, i'm not going to mention any names, are like; a word per line

2004-12-07 [la vie lemon]: well maybe that's the type of poem they are

2004-12-07 [Cookieholic]: yeah... a famous one-word-a-line poem

2004-12-07 [Sunrose]: I noticed that one :)  If people will write them like that it just decreses their chances... :)

2004-12-08 [bringer of chaos]: I think you should make an exception for haiku's. '8 lines unless it's a haiku', you know, becuase that's almost discrimination against a type of poem.

2004-12-08 [my lover is someone I don't know]: yea. haiku's are a valid type of poetry

2004-12-08 [Sunrose]: This contest isn't a haiku-contest :)

2004-12-08 [bringer of chaos]: is there a haiku contest?

2004-12-08 [Sunrose]: I don't know actually :)

2004-12-09 [Doormat]: so are limericks...but they generally don't require too much work, as a long poem does

2004-12-19 [gizmoo12]: I wish I could do try writing a poem too. It ended yesterday!

2004-12-19 [Savanna x3]: i wrote #82 and #50, hehe im so proud, lol

2004-12-22 [Cookieholic]: when will the winner be announced?

2004-12-22 [irulan]: Christmas Day! :) Or maybe Christmas Eve.

2004-12-22 [Cookieholic]: okay ^_^

2004-12-27 [Cookieholic]: uhmm well it's been christmas =P who won? =P

2004-12-27 [Elmiira]: yeah, I would like to know that too

2004-12-27 [Keii]: Same here

2004-12-28 [Sunrose]: It´s being worked on..but due to Christmas and everybody having things to do..., yes we also have things to do ;) , it gets delayed...sorry!

2004-12-28 [Cookieholic]: *collective gasps from around the room* You... have.. lives.... O_O

2004-12-28 [Sunrose]: *holds hand* I know it´s a shock! You´ll be okay...breathe!

2004-12-28 [nokaredes]: breathe?

2004-12-28 [Sunrose]: >_<

2004-12-29 [Cookieholic]: *comes to* *pants* don't ever scare me like thayt again ;)

2004-12-30 [Jeesum Crowe]: *whistles*

2005-01-06 [Cookieholic]: *tickles more* I can't see why people don't want to be tickled, i'm not ticklish by the way ;)
