The oni were said to be demons that live both on earth and in hell. They could take human or animal shape, but were usually invisible. They used different disguises to create all sorts of misery on earth, such as disease, destruction, and famine. They also stole souls or possessed the living, but were often thwarted by Shoki, the demon-queller.
